With its cloistered nuns and gaucho waiters, gilded churches and mountain mummies, Salta e is a rich mix of all the things that make the Northwest so distinctive. Here the old meets the new, and the old wins. The city itself is a sunny mix of colonial architecture; friendly, gracious people; colorful history; and indigenous pride but the real gems in the area are Cafayate.

Set amid a pink, sandy landscape of cactus-dotted vineyards, the sleepy town of Cafayate was chosen by the New York Times like one of the most charming towns in Argentina. Not farn from Salta you can visit Purmamarca, Jujuy, Framing Purmamarca like a timeless painting, the Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of the Seven Colors) reflects its beauty onto the pueblo's quiet streets and dusty adobe homes. Heading back north you will arrive at the artist's haven of Tilcara, with a pre-Hispanic fortress called a pucará. Here you will find spectacular panoramic views of the Humahuaca Valley.
